May McDonough & Co. is a L.A. based indie rock band that sounds like a mash-up of Tom Waits and Portishead. The lead vocalist, May McDonough, adds emotionally wrenching vocals on top of heavy percussions and the found instruments like trashcans and overturned bicycles.

Delaney Gibson’s music is piano based pop with the intelligent lyrics. Gibson’s sound is Regina Spektor meets Ingrid Michaelson. She was recently a part of IdeaJam hosted by Intel Katalyst Films, and Google/YouTube, where she worked with Ashton Kutcher (Katalyst co-founder) and some of the music industry’s most brilliant minds. Delaney’s PledgeMusic Campaign, launched to fund the recording of her third album, has already reached and surpassed the 100% mark. A portion of which she will be donating to Escuela Del Rio, a charity that works with adults with developmental disabilities.

The Commuters
Genre: Alternative Rock

The Commuters musical style has been compared to bands like Snow Patrol and Smashing Pumpkins. But with a Philippine-raised front man and guitarist, a French-raised bass player, and Italian-American drummer, the bands “combined global experiences unquestionably add a wide range of perspective to their songwriting,” as pointed out by lead, Zeeshan Zaidi. Yet, their music maintains traditional rock elements of huge guitars and grounded rhythms. Their video for, “As I Make My Way,” is currently in rotation on MTVU, while their music continuously being added to key college stations, the bands fan based continues to grow domestically and internationally with nearly 18,000 followers combined across their social media platforms.

Canon Logic

Canon Logic has jam-packed their music with striking drumbeats, unyielding energy, new age synths, and a bit of poppy Beach Boys vocal styling. This band is for the fans of groups like Arcade Fire and The Killers. Just last year they were invited to the CMJ marathon and film festival in New York City, where notable bands like U2, R.E.M., and Nirvana got their start.

Secret Skwirl

Traces of late 60’s/early 70’s British pop and psychedelic rhythms pervade the music of Secret Skwirl. Reminiscent of the strong melodies and crisp harmonies of Power-Pop music made popular by groups like The Who and The Knack. But no one seems to know who they are. Hints have been made that they are a duo. And insinuations that they are both a part of a band we may have heard of. Yet, Beatle-esque sounding band has not released their identity, only their fully animated video for their debut song, Jeez Louise.

Jon Bellion’s style is a cross between B.OB. and Jason Mraz but carries a feel of a young Kanye West with his delivery of insightful lyrics. His self-created vocal percussions and layered vocal samples compliment the digital produced sounds of his music, while his rap flow is fun and rhythmically playful. In just over a month Bellion’s official video for Claps and Autotunes for Lovers, has over 16,000 views.

This was a unique find for me. I went to a local bar and was surprised to see that there was someone playing guitar on the little dance floor. Acoustically he sounded like a modern day Bob Dillian and I was impressed listening to him as he was trying to get the poker playing crowd (it was Texas Hold’em Night) involved in his performance. He performed his heart out. So I introduced myself and here we are. Sky Smeed is currently touring the United States and if he is in your area please go and listen live. These three tracks are from his 2006 Mill River CD and his forth cd is currently in production.
